Archangel heads are carefully selected and are available in the following species and weights: Natural, Lambeg and French finished Goat, Kangaroo, Red and Fallow Deer, Natural and French finished Calf; Weights(skin thickness) are - Light approx .20 - .25mm,
- Medium approx .26 -.35mm and
- Heavy approx .36 - .4mm plus.
The three levels of development are based on the following criteria.
- Level 1 – Archangel Red. This is the general or base type of head it has minimal intervention with a single fat liquoring, single staking and a single pre-tensioning before fitting. This type of preparation requires more playing in to develop the bass and full tonal range.
- Level 2 – Archangel Green. This is a head with two fat liquoring sequences, double staking and pre-tensioning and a final head dressing once the head is attached. This head is more flexible with an increase in tonal range and bass.
- Level 3 – Archangel Gold. A head which takes over a week to prepare and has a lubricated staking, tensioning, relaxing and fat liquoring regime to develop as much tonal range potential as is possible. It has as much bass as can be developed without playing in and without becoming soft, it may not have the initial bass of the over chemically processed soft heads of other makers but then it will not die or become unplayable like those sort of heads.
