Here is a short note of « developments »; a check list for musicians who want better sounding instruments can be drawn up and even great sounding drums built

Drum heads and skins.

1. It is now possible to get skins and hence heads that are prepared specifically for that task; we can control the very important variables such as specific species, selection of the best animals and husbandry practices as well as controlling the selection process from the moment the skin leaves the animal. Heads can be selected from the butt area, the best area in terms of quality BUT it generally means only one head per

   skin !

2. The chemistry has changed over the last ten years and drumheads need to be treated differently to other types of leather products

3. Heads can be controlled in terms of thckness and other characteristics in order to produce a better sounding outcome----the Dubbin Days Are Over!!

    

Frames and Tensioning Systems.

1. Drum frames or shells can now be made in a wide rage of materials that offer greater control over the contribution they make to the sound produced. The days of the debate between plywood vs solid wood are a thing of the past. The drum has developed beyond, shiny veneers and celtic knot « tattoos »!!

2. Tuning or tensioning systems are now available that do not interfere with sound production or playing technique. The area of Irish Percussion and Irish Percussive Art is here and the idea of ten lessons and you are ready for public performance are no longer realistic

3. Makers and players can access all this knowledge by consulting the better makers but the market place is dominated by the semi skilled and unprofessional hobbyists who are commercially rather than music oriented. Reputations are based solely on internet invented expertise rather than industry based performance.

Solution.

1. The intending purchaser should take greater responsibility for informing

   themseves and undertake a more active part in the information gathering process and search wider than the forums. It is actually a difficult process

   as most of the « experts » have very limited knowledge. Price is not the ultimate guide.
